Bram Stoker (1847-1912) nació en las afueras de Dublín y su vidafue un cúmulo de contrastes. De niño enfermizo a estudiante del TrinityCollege que destaca tanto en los deportes como en los estudios.Funcionario durante diez años, acabó trabajando como agente del actorHenry Irving. A pesar de su ajetreada vida, tuvo tiempo para escribirnovelas de terror como «La joya de las siete estrellas» (1903), «La dama del sudario» (1909) y «La madriguera del gusano blanco» (1911).Stoker murió en 1912 pero alcanzó la inmortalidad literaria graciasa la creación de un personaje milenario e inmortal, el conde Drácula,que con el paso del tiempo se convertiría en un mito universal.«El invitado de Drácula y otros relatos extraños» (1914)reunía los mejores relatos de terror de Bram Stoker. La colección fue publicada tras su muerte e incluía tres relatos inéditos hasta entonces: “La profecía gitana”, en el que un recién casado visita un campamento gitano con la intención de desenmascarar a sus supuestas adivinadoras, “El regreso de Abel Behenna”, que nos cuenta la historia de la hermosa Sarah y su peculiar modo de elegir entre sus dos pretendientes, y“El invitado de Drácula”, texto originalmente escrito como primer capítulo de «Drácula» (1897) y posteriormente suprimido por Stoker debido a la excesiva extensión de la obra. El lector encontrará tambiénen este volumen relatos como “La casa del juez” (1891), “El sueño delas manos rojas” (1894) o el terrorífico “El entierro de las ratas” (1878).Completan este volumen cuatro relatos reunidos por primera vez porPeter Haining (1980-91): “La cadena del destino” (1875), “Los dualistas” (1887), “El vidente” (1910) y “Las nupcias de la muerte” (1912).Se trata, pues, de una colección de relatos extraños y macabros,que muestra las mejores facetas del arte narrativo de Bram Stoker,con su singular maestría para engarzar los elementos emotivosy dramáticos en una creciente atmósfera de terror.
